Haloperidol

Mental health & behavioural problems that affect the way of thinking, feeling or behaving, eg, schizophrenia & bipolar disorder; delirium, hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, hyperactivity, aggression, hostility, violence. Prevention or treatment of nausea & vomiting after surgery.

IM Individualized dosage. Adult Initially 1-5 mg. Extra doses may be given every 1-4 hr apart. Max: 20 mg/day. Elderly Initially ½ of the lowest adult dose. Max: 5 mg/day.

Hypersensitivity. Decreased awareness of surroundings or unusually slow reactions. Parkinson's disease. Lewy body dementia. Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Prolonged QT interval or any problem w/ heart rhythm. Heart failure or recent heart attack. Untreated, low K levels.

Severe allergic reactions. Risk of heart & body or limb movement problems; neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Elderly w/ dementia. Patients w/ slow heartbeat, heart disease, family history of heart problems; low BP, or feeling dizzy upon sitting or standing up; history of brain haemorrhage; high risk of stroke; epilepsy or history of convulsions; thyroid gland problems; elevated prolactin levels, or cancer that may be caused by high prolactin levels (eg, breast cancer); history of blood clots; depression, or depressive phase of bipolar disorder. Perform ECG test & monitor K or Mg levels (or other electrolytes) before or during treatment. May affect ability to drive & use tools or machines. Kidney & liver problems. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescents <18 yr.

Agitation; difficulty in sleeping; headache. Delusions, hallucinations; depression; abnormal muscle tension; feeling dizzy & sleepy; uncontrollable upward or rapid eye movements; vision problems (eg, blurred vision); low BP; nausea, vomiting; constipation; dry mouth or increased saliva; skin rash; inability to pass urine or empty bladder completely; impotence; wt gain or loss; changes in blood tests of liver.

Increased risk of heart problems w/ antiarrhythmic drugs (eg, amiodarone, dofetilide, disopyramide, dronedarone, ibutilide, quinidine and sotalol); antidepressants (eg, citalopram, escitalopram, duloxetine, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, nefazodone, paroxetine, sertraline, St John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) or venlafaxine); antipsychotics (eg, fluphenazine, levomepromazine, perphenazine, pimozide, prochlorperazine, promazine, sertindole, thiorizadine, trifluoperazine, triflupromazine, ziprasidone); antibacterials (eg, azithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, telithromycin); antifungals (eg, pentamidine, itraconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole); antimalarials (eg, halofantrine); anti-emetics (eg, dolasetron, chlorpromazine, promethazine); antineoplastics (eg, toremifene, vandetanib); bepridil; methadone; anxiolytics (eg, alprazolam or buspirone); bupropion; antiepileptics (eg, carbamazepine, phenobarb, phenytoin); rifampicin; ketoconazole tab; indinavir, ritonavir or saquinavir; verapamil; diuretics. Co-administration w/ lithium; tranquilisers; strong pain killers; TCAs; drugs that lower BP (eg, guanethidine, methyldopa); adrenaline; stimulants; levodopa; blood thinners (eg, phenindione); alcohol.
